- SPO3SportsParaguay keep World Cup course; Brazil, Argentina struggleRio de Janeiro/Santiago, Oct 16 DPA Brazil and Argentina failed to register wins in the South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa while Paraguay got three points and remained comfortably at the top of the table. Brazil drew 0-0 with Colombia Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro, and Argentina lost 0-1 to Chile in Santiago while Paraguay beat Peru 1-0 in Asuncion, and Venezuela downed the up-and-coming Ecuador 3-1 at home in Puerto La Cruz. As a result, Paraguay have 23 points from 10 games with Brazil trailing on 17. Argentina and Chile are third with 16 points, followed by Uruguay on 13. In South America's World Cup qualifiers, each of the 10 sides plays each of the other nine teams at home and away. The top four win a place in the World Cup. The fifth-place team has a chance to advance through a playoff against a representative of the North, Central American and Caribbean region. Brazil were held to a lacklustre goalless draw by Colombia. Kaka and Robinho were powerless to break through the Colombian defence although it was Brazil that had the best chances in the game. Spectators at the Maracana stadium were at best bored by their team's poor performance, and they devoted substantial booing and even insults to coach Carlos Dunga and his men, particularly to demand Dunga's exit. The match was Brazil's third-consecutive home game without a win and also without scoring. Moreover, they replicated their performance last month when a resounding 3-0 win in Chile was followed by a disappointing goalless draw against 10-man Bolivia in Rio de Janeiro. On Sunday, Brazil thrashed Venezuela 4-0 away, but they once again failed to follow up on the good performance on home ground. Chile scored a resounding 1-0 win against Argentina to establish solid credentials to reach the World Cup. Fabian Orellana scored the only goal in Santiago in the 35th minute. Chile had all the clear scoring chances, and Argentina played poorly despite fielding superstars Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero. With a tireless, well-rounded team effort and great midfield work from Matias Fernandez, Chile at all times appeared in command. "They were better than us, and they beat us deservedly," Argentine coach Alfio Basile said. He noted that "everything worked out" for Chile, and he could only go "weep in church" about the poor performance. Chile's Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa said he was proud of his men. "Of course, the rival dresses up the performance," Bielsa said. "Winning is not the same as beating the best." Earlier Wednesday, Paraguay beat Peru 1-0 to keep up their torrid pace in the qualifiers. In Asuncion, Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo scored in the 81st minute, following a series of rebounds in the Peruvian box. Venezuela put on a surprising second-half performance to beat Ecuador 3-1. Ecuador pulled ahead Wednesday with a goal from Isaac Mina in the 10th minute, but Venezuela reversed things with goals by Giancarlo Maldonado in the 48th minute, Alejandro Moreno eight minutes later and Juan Arango in the 67th minute. A break in the qualifying round follows with the next matches in the qualifiers scheduled for late March.--DPAabr/jg600 Words16101215

- Legions of harpists play throughout the countryside, in the concert halls of the capital city and even in Asuncion's airport terminal. People play the instrument's 36 strings with their fingernails, and the resulting sound is the music of Paraguay — particularly when the songs are the country's traditional polkas.

-
By Robert Smith
BEIJING
Aug. 22: Underdogs Nigeria believe they have the attacking weaponry to pressure ArgentinaâÂÂs defence in the much-anticipated menâÂÂs football Olympic gold medal match at the BirdâÂÂs Nest on Saturday.
Nigeria already have the pyschological edge from winning the corresponding final 12 years ago in Atlanta to become the first African Olympic champions, but Argentina go in as favourites after their 3-0 mastery of Brazil in TuesdayâÂÂs semifinals.
ItâÂÂs a showpiece decider for the football connoisseur, two lavishly-talented outfits with a panache to go forward and attack and resile from a negative, defensive mindset.
Argentina have the scintillating skills of Spanish-based trio Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Fernando Gago, but that will not put off Nigeria having a crack back through their attackers Peter Odemwingie and Victor Nsofor Obinna supplemented by wide players, Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi and Solomon Okoronkwo.
The Nigerians love to take on rival defences and they will have no intention of sitting back to trying to stifle the mercurial Messi, rather they will look to pressure the Argentinian back four as much as they can.
But that will have to be tempered with tactical discipline, resisting the urge to commit too many men forward and leave themselves open to the slick Argentine counter-attacks, usually focused around the explosive pace of Barcelona superstar Messi.
âÂÂWe have to play like coach Samson Siasia told us, and not have everyone trying to do something special," Hertha Berlin striker Okoronkwo said. "We have to play simple and conserve energy."
But much of the destiny of the 2008 Beijing final revolves around how Nigeria handle Messi.
Even when Messi was man-marked by Brazil in their semifinal he still brought about their downfall, setting up AgueroâÂÂs second goal in the 58th minute when he attracted defenders, yet was able to slip a through ball to Ezequiel Garay on the right flank, and his low cross allowed an unmarked Aguero to tap in from close range.
"We have to make sure we donâÂÂt give them room to operate," coach Siasia said. "Messi is going to be a handful, we know that. But if you shut off the supply to Messi, it makes it more difficult for him."
Messi brought Nigeria undone in the final of the 2005 Fifa under-20 World Cup in Utrecht when he earned and converted two penalties in a 2-1 win.
"ItâÂÂs still fresh," recalled Siasia. "We actually gave that game up ourselves with the two penalties. But this team has grown, and now we have more experience. I donâÂÂt think weâÂÂll make the same mistakes twice."
Argentina football legend Maradona, a regular at their games in Beijing, is forecasting a 2-0 win for his team in the final.
"Hopefully it will turn out how I say, so that the boys can win the gold medal, because they deserve it," he said. "But be careful, Nigeria are a good team, we have to respect them, but I am very confident in this team, and in âÂÂChechoâ coach Sergio Batista," he said.
Argentina, benefitting from a rich crop of exciting under-23 players and well-marshalled by 30-year-old Boca Juniors playmaker Juan Riquelme, are defending the title from their 1-0 win over Paraguay in Athens four years ago. â AFP
